Thyroid Health:Hormonal Health

“My thyroid has been checked and it’s fine” is a sentence we hear ALL. THE. TIME. It is usually followed by “Your bloods are normal. It’s all in your head. You’re probably just depressed”.

Well, let us tell you, it probably hasn’t (been tested) and it’s usually not (fine).

Thyroid problems interfere with getting pregnant.

One of the most common conditions with far reaching and terrible implications for both physical and mental health is HYPOTHYROIDISM (sluggish thyroid).

It looks like this:

  • Constant fatigue
  • Debilitating exhaustion
  • Poor motivation
  • Mood disorders & depression
  • Brain fog
  • Difficulty losing weight
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Cold sensitivity
  • Female pattern hair loss
  • Sluggish bowels
  • Hormonal issues
  • Constantly getting sick
  • Pregnancy issues (especially an increased risk of miscarriage in the first trimester).
  • It can also interfere with fertility & the ability to conceive

How could that be ‘all in your head?’

It is also one of the most commonly missed and poorly diagnosed conditions that I see clinically.

And…it usually hasn’t been checked properly. Standard medical exam for thyroid is a blood test for TSH. To have your thyroid fully checked and to be able to rule out thyroid issues with confidence, a Thyroid Panel is the only way- TSH, T3, T4, Reverse T3 & thyroid antibodies. TSH is in fact the last thing to change and is checking your brain, not your thyroid hormones per se. TSH is the regulator for your thyroid hormones T3 and T4- it keeps everything else in check. That means logically, that T3 and T4 will change well before TSH.

The other major issue is that we are still using and analysing out of date reference ranges for TSH. The reference range changed in 2003 from acceptable being 0.5-5.5 to 0.5-3. That means 15 year old reference ranges are still being used!!

At The Fertile Project we are versed and successful in treating:

  • Hypothyroidism / Hyperthyroidism
  • Autoimmune thyroid disease: Hashimoto’s / Graves disease
  • Post partum thyroid disease, thyrotoxicosis, thyroiditis
  • Wilson’s temperature syndrome
  • Cushings syndrome
